Alfred Alcorn is the chief editor of the American Heritage Dictionary and author of many other books on language, including Eats, Shoots and Leaves. He received his B.A. in English from Carleton College, his M. Div
from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. in linguistics from Cornell University. He has taught at the Universities of Chicago, Texas, and North Carolina.
He was appointed to the Commission on Terminology of the American Heritage Dictionary (1977) and is currently (2007) associate editor for the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
